Energetika: Ash Landfill to Be Removed by the End of the Year

The removal of the ash landfill from the premises of the Kragujevac heating plant is progressing at a satisfactory pace, according to Kragujevac's "Energetika".

Since the start of this project, more than half of the estimated 60,000 tons of ash has been removed.

The ash is being transported to cement factories in Popovac and Kosjerić.

Although the deadline is March 2027, the removal of the ash landfill is expected to be completed in the autumn.

Alongside the overhaul of the heating network, Kragujevac's "Energetika" is actively working on removing the ash landfill from the heating plant grounds.

This is the second phase of a state project valued at three million euros.

So far, more than half of the estimated amount of ash, which accumulated over the years as a byproduct of coal combustion, has been removed.

The removal of the ash landfill will have a major environmental impact and will solve the pollution problem that residents of surrounding neighborhoods have complained about in recent years.

The replacement of boilers in the first phase of the project also contributed to this, improving the efficiency of heat energy production.

Instead of a very low 50 percent, system efficiency with gas boilers is now around 95 percent.

The ash is transported by truck to cement plants in Popovac and Kosjerić.

Since the factory in Kosjerić subsequently signed on as a buyer, this will speed up the implementation of the project, whose deadline is March 2027.

The ash landfill removal is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Ash Landfill Remediation in Kragujevac Ahead of Schedule: 15,000 Tons Already Removed

The Director of “Energetika” d.o.o. Kragujevac, Aleksandar Lazović, together with the Director of the Technical Affairs Directorate, Miloš Radović, visited the ash landfill remediation site, where works are progressing faster than planned.

Thanks to a high level of organization and the full commitment of the employees, the ash removal process has been significantly accelerated. During the course of today, 32 semi-trucks carrying a total of 800 tons of ash were dispatched to the cement plants in Kosjerić and Novi Popovac.

According to official data, 15,060 tons of waste have been removed from the landfill so far out of a total of 60,000 tons, marking a significant step towards a permanent solution to one of Kragujevac's biggest environmental issues.

Management projections indicate that the complete remediation could be finished within the next ten months, after which the ash landfill, as a long-standing environmental burden, will become history.

The realization of the project, valued at three million euros, was made possible with the support of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and the City of Kragujevac.

Kragujevac Resolves a Decades-Long Problem: Successful End of the Heating Season and Accelerated Ash Dump Remediation

Mayor of Kragujevac Nikola Dašić visited the Energetika d.o.o. Kragujevac enterprise this morning to inspect the progress of the ash dump remediation, which is being carried out as part of the second phase of the strategic project Modernization of the District Heating System, as well as the operations of the company's modern Command Center.

Resolving the ash dump issue is a historic undertaking that eliminates a decades-long environmental problem in a large part of the city. The site is being regularly cleared of ash in cooperation with two cement plants, which accelerates the dynamics, so we expect the entire job to be completed within ten months, Dašić stated.

He emphasized that this is one of the most important projects for Kragujevac and that the cleanup will be followed by soil remediation works that will permanently protect public health, while also thanking the line Ministry for its support.

The heating season is successfully drawing to a close, citizens had a stable and orderly supply of thermal energy throughout the winter, and these hardworking people worked day and night to ensure the system operated reliably and that any potential problem was resolved as quickly as possible. Today I saw for myself that everything is functioning stably, the mayor concluded.

Director of the Energetika d.o.o. Kragujevac enterprise Aleksandar Lazović highlighted that 12,698 tons out of an estimated total of 60,000 tons of ash have been removed so far, recalling that the transport began on August 4th last year. According to him, thanks to the involvement of two cement plants, in Popovac and Kosjerić, the remediation is expected to be completed well ahead of the contractually agreed 24-month deadline.

Lazović added that the heating season for about 22,000 users is ending without any supply disruptions, and that planned maintenance works will follow its conclusion so the system can welcome the next winter fully prepared.

The operations of the Command Center and the newest boiler room, built in 2022, were presented by the director of the Technical Affairs Directorate Miloš Radović. He stated that this boiler room covers about 60 percent of total consumption and operates with complete stability using state-of-the-art equipment, and that energy efficiency has been significantly increased from the former 50 percent to as much as 95 to 96 percent.
